Full Time Production Manager

Job Description:


Sarah Sze Studio currently seeks a high-level full-time candidate to oversee and manage all aspects production in an extremely busy, fast paced art studio that typically produces work for 4-6 major exhibitions a year both domestically and internationally.

The Production Manager will participate in and oversee all production at the studio and on site at various institutions and galleries. The Production Manager will manage teams of 3-5 assistants, and will also being willing to perform any task themselves.

The Production Manager is expected to take ownership of all projects from start to finish, and to maintain an atmosphere of respect for the creative process in the studio at all times. The Production Manager is responsible for keeping track of scheduling and deadlines, and using time, people, and resources efficiently. They must have the ability to manage tasks on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis.

Successful candidates must have the ability to think ahead and to anticipate problems and solutions, and must have the flexibility to shift production schedules and processes as creative needs dictate. They must be willing to do whatever task is needed, however large or small, to meet the creative goals of the studio.

The position requires an extremely professional and discreet demeanor, with excellent studio, organizational, and communication skills and involves traveling a minimum of 2-3 times per year, up to 3-4 weeks at a time. An excellent knowledge of materials, sculptural techniques and structural building, and a proficiency in detailed work a must. Other preferred skills include proficiency in Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, and the ability to use and troubleshoot digital cameras, ink-jet printers, and scanners.


Minimum Responsibilities:

  • The management of all studio assistants on a daily basis--creating and assigning tasks and overseeing quality control for all production teams, as well as participating directly in studio work, for multiple projects at a time
  • The management of the studio production schedule, including daily tasks and goals, an understanding of larger deadlines and goals, and the ability to assess and adjust timelines within and between multiple projects
  • The management of all supplies, vendors, and materials
  • The maintenance and management of the physical studio space
  • The management of and participation in all on-site installations
  • Oversight of all packing, shipping, installation notes, and documentation


Essential Skills and Qualities:
  • Ability to absorb, integrate, and act on information quickly
  • Ability to work independently, and ask questions as necessary
  • Ability to take ownership of a project from beginning to end
  • Great flexibility, with the ability to shift schedules and processes as dictated by creative needs
  • Excellent communications skills, and excellent ability to maintain a quiet creative atmosphere
  • Experience and skill in managing teams of 3-5 people
  • Excellent knowledge of materials, sculptural techniques and structural building
  • Ability to research and source any material or process necessary
  • Ability to work with great precision and detail
  • Willingness to do repetitive tasks
  • Willingness to do any job, no matter how big or small
  • Strong MAC computer skills: Office, Excel, Powerpoint, Gmail, google calendar. Proficiency with Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Sketch up, Filemaker preferred
  • Interest in travel

Three years experience in a studio or arts setting highly preferred. Full time position. Salary commensurate with experience.

Freelance project-based Studio Assistant

Job Description:


Sarah Sze Studio currently seeks freelance assistants to work on a part-time, project by project basis. Successful candidates will be hard-working, reliable, able to work successfully in a group, and be willing to do whatever task is needed, however large or small, to meet the creative needs of the studio.

Demonstrated structural carpentry and building skills are required. A knowledge of materials and sculptural techniques including model making, painting surface preparation, welding, and/or ceramics are a big plus. All assistants must have the ability to work with great precision and detail on repetitive tasks.

Other preferred skills include Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, and the ability to use and troubleshoot digital cameras, ink-jet printers, and scanners.
